Mike + The Mechanics - Let Me Fly

Let Me Fly is the eighth studio album by British pop rock supergroup Mike + The Mechanics, released in April 2017 via BMG.

Following the dissolution of the band in 2004 with the departure of Paul Carrack to focus on his solo career, Mike Rutherford (Genesis) reformed the band with a revised line-up in 2010 comprising Andrew Rutherford (ex-Roachford on lead and backing vocals), Tim Howar (lead and backing vocals), Gary Wallis (drums), Anthony Drennan (guitars) and Luke Juby (keyboards). A studio album The Road was released in 2011 with a supporting tour, cementing the band’s comeback.

After six years, the band has released their eighth studio album Let Me Fly in 2017 with twelve songs co-written by Rutherford with various band members and other writers. The album features polished mature pop songs, with the progressive rock influences of Genesis long gone. The title track “Let Me Fly” is a soaring message of hope with an arrangement that recalls the hit “The Living Years”.

1980s synth-pop flavours introduce the song “Are You Ready?”, and there are some great ballads such as “Save My Soul” and “Love Left Over”. Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar share the lead vocal duties and Anthony Drennan’s guitar shines throughout the album.

The album was produced by Brian Rawling, Harry Rutherford, Mark Taylor, Mike Rutherford and Paul Meehan.

This is an album that reminds you of the quality music that Mike Rutherford is capable of making, and wonderful to have some new material from a member of Genesis, whilst that band remains inactive. Sit, back, relax and let the songs wash over you.
