Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit is the second studio album by American singer songwriter Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, originally released in February 2009 via Southeastern Records and Lightening Rod Records.

Ever since his astonishing debut with the Drive-By Truckers in the early 2000s, Jason Isbell has been someone to watch. Here was a kid from a tiny town in Alabama who could sing, play guitar and (most thrillingly of all) write songs with a wisdom, wit and swagger rarely seen even in the crowded Americana field. Isbell arrived fully formed, and his best work with the Truckers ranks among the best work that great band has ever released.

When he went solo half a decade later, he had lost much of this early fire. Struggling with alcoholism and a mean streak, wading through the morass of a failing marriage, he released a few spotty solo records before finding his voice again with 2011's Here We Rest. Since then, sober and re-married, the one-time whiz kid has solidified his place as Americana's veteran master. His recent two records, 2013's emotional, confessional Southeastern, and 2015’s Something More Than Free, were an out and out triumph.

In 2019, four time Grammy Award winner Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit reissued two of the group's earliest albums 2009's self-titled Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit and 2011's Here We Rest, both remixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb and remastered by Pete Lyman.

These records contain some of Isbell's most beloved fan favourites, including "Alabama Pines," "Codeine," "Cigarettes and Wine," "The Blue" and "Tour Of Duty". Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit marked the former Drive-By Truckers member's second solo release and his first with the powerful and nuanced 400 Unit.

Co-produced by Isbell and the 400 Unit with Matt Pence, the album was recorded at the renowned Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and follows in the tradition of American songwriters who have recorded in North Alabama. Much like Arthur Alexander, Eddie Hinton and Spooner Oldham, Isbell mixes a soulful vocal style with songs that are passionate and unrepentant in their sense of place and direct in their stubborn Southerness.

This double album 2LP record set is a 2019 reissue on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with four bonus tracks, remixed and remastered audio, pressed in the US via Southeastern Records.
