Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is the debut studio album by American hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, originally released in November 1993 via Loud Records.
The Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group from New York City, originally composed of East Coast rappers RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Cappadonna. The group was formed in and is associated with the New York City borough of Staten Island.
The Wu-Tang Clan has released seven gold and platinum studio albums with worldwide sales of more than 40 million albums, including members' solo projects, since 1992.
Its debut album, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), is considered to be one of the greatest albums in hip-hop history and it is said to have been ground breaking for hip-hop and one of the most important albums of the hip-hop golden age.
The Wu-Tang Clan has introduced and launched the careers of a number of affiliated artists and groups, often collectively known as the Wu-Tang Killa Bees and it has been mentioned to be one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all-time. In 2008, About.com ranked them the No. 1 greatest hip hop group of all time". Kris Ex of Rolling Stone called Wu-Tang Clan "the best rap group ever". In 2004, NME hailed them as one of the most influential groups of the last ten years.
Recording sessions for the Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) took place during 1992 to 1993 at Firehouse Studio in New York City, and it was mastered at The Hit Factory.
The album's title originates from the martial arts film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978). The group's de facto leader RZA, also known as Prince Rakeem, produced the album entirely, utilizing heavy, eerie beats and a sound largely based on martial-arts movie clips and soul music samples.
The distinctive sound of Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) created a blueprint for hardcore hip hop during the 1990s and helped return New York City hip hop to national prominence. Its sound also became greatly influential in modern hip hop production, while the group members' explicit, humorous, and free-associative lyrics have served as a template for many subsequent hip hop records.
Serving as a landmark record in the era of hip hop known as the East Coast Renaissance, its influence helped lead the way for several other East Coast hip hop artists, including NAS, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and Jay-Z.
Despite its raw, underground sound, the album had surprising chart success, peaking at #41 on the US Billboard 200 chart and #8 on the US R&B Hip Hop Albums charts. By 1995, it was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold over two million copies in the United States.
Initially receiving positive reviews from most music critics, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is widely regarded as one of the most significant albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever.
Three singles were released from the album all achieving moderate success on the US Singles charts: “Method Man”, “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Can It Be All So Simple”.
This album is a 2023 limited edition reissue on gold marbled coloured vinyl housed in a single pocket sleeve, pressed in Europe via RCA Records.
