Born To Die is the second studio album by American singer songwriter Lana Del Rey, originally released in January 2012 via Polydor and Interscope Records.
Sometimes stars emerge. Sometimes stars are thrust upon us. And sometimes stars simply slip into the atmosphere as if propelled by something otherworldly.
It is into this last category that the astonishing presence, voice, look and feel of Lana Del Rey falls. Musical stardom is not an option with Ms Del Rey, it is her vocation. She calls herself the 'gangsta Nancy Sinatra’.
After scrapes in and out of the music industry, holding onto the fastidious dreams of the possibilities for Lana Del Rey, a breathtaking musical landscape has emerged. Brittle, emotional, cascading with cinematic reference points, her song writing is evidently technicolour.
Before the album's release, Del Rey had attracted attention with her 2011 singles "Video Games" and "Born to Die", which contrasted contemporary electronic / dance music with their cinematic sound accompanied by dramatic string instruments.
A predominantly baroque pop and trip hop album, Born to Die features the same cinematic composition. The lyrics are about love, sex, and drugs, and feature prominent references to 1950s and 1960s Americana.
The album was the world's fifth best-selling album of 2012, as of 2024 it has sold over 18 million copies. In 2023, it became the second album by a woman to spend more than 500 weeks on the US Billboard 200, where it peaked at number two, and topped charts in Australia and various European countries including France, Germany, and the UK.
This double album 2LP record set is a 2023 repress of the deluxe edition on black vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with a printed insert and three bonus tracks, pressed in Europe via Polydor and Interscope Records.
