Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut studio album by British rock band Arctic Monkeys, originally released in January 2006 via Domino.

Formed in Sheffield, England, in 2002, the Arctic Monkeys consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar), Matt Helders (drums, vocals), Jamie Cook (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, piano) and Nick O'Malley (bass, backing vocals). Former band member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in 2006 shortly after their debut album was released.

The band have won seven Brit Awards - winning both Best British Group and Best British Album three times, and have been nominated for three Grammy Awards. They also won the Mercury Prize in 2006 for their debut album, in addition to receiving nominations in 2007 and 2013. The band have headlined at the Glastonbury Festival twice, first in 2007, and again in 2013.

The band's musical style often falls under the umbrella of indie rock, with a key part of the band's sound being lead singer and frontman Alex Turner's intricate and often rapidly delivered lyrics, sung in a strong Sheffield accent. A large part of their iconic British sound is credited to the punk poet John Cooper Clarke from whom the Arctic Monkeys borrowed lyrics and the title from in "I Wanna Be Yours".

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was recorded between June and September 2005 at Chapel Studios, and was produced by Alan Smyth and Jim Abbiss (noted for his work on Kasabian's Kasabian and Empire, Ladytron's Witching Hour, and both of Adele's albums 19 and 21).

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not has been considered by some a concept album with "the lives of young Northern England clubbers" being a theme throughout the album. "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", "Still Take You Home", "You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights But You Were Staring Straight at Me" and "Dancing Shoes" all examining human behaviour in nightclubs. Frontman Alex Turner describes "Dancing Shoes" as being about "people always looking to pull when they go out however much they mask it."

Other songs examine other aspects of nightlife; "From the Ritz to the Rubble" is an account of nightclub bouncers, "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" tells the typical experiences and troubles of getting a taxicab after a night out, and "When the Sun Goes Down" was inspired by prostitutes in the locality of their practice room in the Neepsend district of Sheffield.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the fastest selling debut album in British music history, selling more than 360,000 copies in its first week, and remains the fastest selling debut album by a band. It has since gone 5x Platinum in the UK, and is often cited as one of the best rock albums of the decade, and ranking at number 371 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
