Back To Black is the second and final studio album by English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, originally released in October 2006 via Island Records.
Known for her deep expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz, Amy Winehouse made her debut with 2003's Frank, which was a critical success in the UK, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her follow-up album, Back To Black, led to five 2008 Grammy Awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made her the first British woman to win five Grammys, including three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. In 2012, Winehouse was ranked 26th on VH1's 100 Greatest Women in Music and was called "the pre-eminent vocal talent of her generation" by the BBC.
Working with producer Mark Ronson (Adele, Lily Allen) on Back To Black, Amy Winehouse moved away from the jazz influences of Frank, instead drawing influence from the girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s, and enlisting Sharon Jones' band the Dap Kings as a backing band for the album. Amy Winehouse's singing style on the album was compared to Sarah Vaughan and Macy Gray, and received almost universal acclaim from critics, with the Guardian's Dorian Lynskey referring to it as "a 21st-century soul classic".
Back To Black has also been attributed to the continuing wave of British female artists that have been successful in the United States, such as Adele and Duffy.
Back To Black sold over 3.5 million copies in the UK alone, becoming the UK's second best-selling album of the 21st century. By 2013, the album had sold over 12 million copies worldwide, earning multi-Platinum certification in over 15 countries.
The album peaked at #2 on the US Billboard 200, #1 on the UK, #1 on the New Zealand and #4 on the Australian Albums charts.
Five singles were released from the album "Rehab", "You Know I'm No Good", "Back To Black", "Tears Dry on Their Own", and "Love Is a Losing Game".
This album is a 2024 limited edition reissue on blue & black cornetto coloured vinyl housed in a single pocket sleeve with a printed inner sleeve, pressed in Europe via Island Records.
