Cinema is the fifth studio album by Australian alternative rock band The Cat Empire, originally released in June 2010 via EMI Records.
The Cat Empire are an Australian ska and jazz band formed in 1999 and based in Melbourne. Core members are:
- Felix Riebl - percussion and vocals
- Harry James Angus - trumpet and vocals
- Will Hull-Brown - drums
- Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala - decks, percussion
- Ollie McGill - keyboard and backing vocals
- Ryan Monro - bass and backing vocals
They are often supplemented by The Empire Horns, a brass duo composed of Ross Irwin (trumpet) and Kieran Conrau (trombone), and have recurring guest musicians.
Their sound is a fusion of jazz, ska, funk and rock with heavy Latin influences.
Cinema was co-produced by the band with Steve Schram and debuted at #3 on the Australian ARIA Albums chart.
Felix Riebl described the album title as follows: "…is very cinematic, simply put ... Another way to describe it is that it is like a soundtrack to a movie that we might make one day. When [Schram] and I were sitting around and trying to come up with a title we thought that the name we eventually chose would suit the atmosphere…"
Two singles were released from the album “Feeling’s Gone” and “Falling”.
Alexey Eremenko reviewing the album for AllMusic writes “…Sometimes the music sounds like dub, sometimes like Italian pop, in one or two places even like Phil Collins, but for the most part it's still Cat Empire, who did not lose any of their power, but are simply in a pensive and occasionally dramatic mood because of love woes (of course). The band still packs plenty of groove, but balances it with tension and smooths the whole thing with great songwriting, and the end result turns out to be an irresistibly catchy album that works just fine whether you decide to dance or brood to it…”
Check out the tracks: “Feeling’s Gone”; “Falling”; “Waiting”; and “The Heart Is a Cannibal”.
This double album 2LP record set is a 2013 reissue on 150 gram black vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve, pressed in Australia via Two Shoes Records and Inertia.
