It's My Life is the second studio album by British art rock band Talk Talk, originally released in February 1984 via EMI Records.
Talk Talk were an English Art Rock band, active from 1981 until their breakup in 1992. Initially part of the New Wave music scene, their early hit singles include “It's My Life” (1984), “Such a Shame” (1984) and “Life's What You Make It” (1985/1986). Talk Talk moved away from New Wave towards more experimental music in the late-1980s and are widely credited with helping develop and influence the "Post-Rock" genre in their final two albums, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock.
For their second album It’s My Life, the band chose Tim Friese-Greene to produce the record, and he became a touring member of the band, playing keyboards. He also became a frequent songwriting partner with Mark Hollis.
This album saw the band move to a more sophisticated sound and song constructs, emulating a Roxy Music style, or perhaps a Peter Gabriel sound. They produced a highly personalised album with seductive grooves and musical diversity that transcended the pure synth-pop tag that the band had inherited from it’s debut album. They mixed real instruments in together with synthesisers, and introduced world rhythms into their sonic landscape as well.
They managed to create a catchy single “Dum Dum Girl” together with the standout track “Does Caroline Know?”, and overall a cohesive album. It showed that the band had potential to produce even more inspiring music than their debut might have indicated.
The album reached #35 on the UK Albums charts, however charted more strongly in the US, reaching #42 on the US Billboard 200 Albums charts.
Check out the tracks: “Dum Dum Girl”; “It’s My Life”; “Such A Shame”; “Tomorrow Started”; and “Does Caroline Know?”.
