…Nothing Like The Sun is the second solo studio album by British musician Sting, originally released in October 1987 via A&M Records.
This album followed the success of his debut solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985) and continued with similar musical styles and themes as seen on the previous album. The songs ranged from personal loss to political commentary, most notable on “They Dance Alone (Cueca Solo)” that was inspired by his witnessing of public demonstrations of grief by the wives and daughters of men missing in Chile, tortured and murdered by the military dictatorship of the time, who danced the Cueca (the traditional dance of Chile) by themselves, with photos of their loved ones pinned to their clothes.
Continuing with a jazz theme, “Englishman In New York” was written about Quentin Crisp and became a successful single released from the album. Elsewhere, the songs "Be Still My Beating Heart" and "The Lazarus Heart" approach the subjects of life, love and death.
The first single released from the album was “We’ll Be Together” which was a very danceable funk number featuring Annie Lennox on backing vocals and reached #7 on the US Hot 100 Singles chart.
The album was produced by Sting with Hugh Padgham, Bryan Loren, and Neil Dorfsman. The album featured a number of high-profile guest guitarists, including former Police member Andy Summers, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Hiram Bullock. French drummer Manu Katché was featured on the album along with Kenny Kirkland (keyboards) and Branford Marsalis (sax). Also featured on backing vocals was Australian songstress Renée Geyer.
The album received critical acclaim upon release and is regarded as one of his finest solo albums. It peaked at #1 on the UK, #3 on the Australian and #9 on the US Billboard 200 Albums charts.
Check out the singles: “We’ll Be Together”; “Be Still My Beating Heart”; “Englishman In New York”; “Fragile” and “They Dance Alone”.
