Aja is the sixth studio album by American jazz rock band Steely Dan, originally released in September 1977 via ABC Records.

Steely Dan is an American jazz rock band founded in 1972 by core members Walter Becker (guitars, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals). Blending elements of jazz, R&B, traditional pop, and sophisticated studio production with ironic and cryptic lyrics, the band enjoyed critical and commercial success starting from the early 1970s until breaking up in 1981. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies". Steely Dan reunited in 1993 and has toured steadily ever since. Becker died on 3 September 2017, leaving Fagen as the only official member.

Aja was recorded over a period of more than six months in 1977, featuring a range of jazz and rock fusion musicians. The title track “Aja” features a distinctive sax solo by Wayne Shorten. Other luminaries featured included Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour (guitars), Chuck Rainey (bass), Pete Christlieb and Tom Scott (sax), Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta and Bernard Purdie (drums), Joe Sample (piano) and ex-Miles Davis pianist Victor Feldman and Grammy Award winning producer / arranger Michael Omartian (piano).

The first single released from the album was “Peg” featuring Michael McDonald on backing vocals, followed by “Josie” and “Deacon Blues”.

The album became the band’s best selling record, peaking at #3 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart and #5 on the UK Albums chart and sold more than five million copies. In July 1978, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. In 2003, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and ranked number 145 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.

The album is regarded by audiophiles as one of the best recordings made due to its high production standards.

Barry Walters reviewing the album for Rolling Stone magazine in 2001 rated the album 5 stars and writes: “…Aja's extended tracks achieve their power through a dynamic dance: Mellow, stark passages (which drew a blueprint for "smooth jazz" radio) are offset by obsessively dense musicianship, stacks of notes that grasp at euphoria. Some of the era's hottest jazz instrumentalists - Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott - soar through what's often on the surface utterly jubilant. "Peg," the album's biggest hit, is nearly disco, and "I Got the News" isn't far away. The closing cut, "Josie," almost plays the celebration straight, though its backward-looking R&B; keeps getting tripped up by restless rhythms. But there are so many unresolved chords, so much sweet dissonance, that the album's sleek virtuosity collapses against itself, leaving behind a loneliness rendered mostly oblique by Donald Fagen's heady wordplay. On "Deacon Blues," he cuts through his own cleverness to paint a picture of noir-shaded simplicity: "Drink Scotch whiskey all night long and die behind the wheel." That's Aja: frustration and failure at the heart of the party…”

Aja is regarded as a classic album and one of Steely Dan’s finest pieces of work.
