Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is the debut studio album by British synth-pop duo Soft Cell, originally released in November 1981 via Some Bizzare Records.
The synth-pop duo Soft Cell was formed around 1977 by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball.
Their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret explored themes of squalor and sleaze. "Seedy Films" talks of long nights in porno cinemas, while "Frustration" and "Secret Life" deal with the boredom and hypocrisy associated with suburban life.
The first single from the album “Tainted Love” was released in July 1981 well ahead of the album’s release and became an instant success topping the singles charts in the UK and Australia.
The second single released from the album was "Bedsitter", which dealt with the loneliness and lifestyle of a young man having recently left home to live in a bedsit while partying hard. "Bedsitter" peaked at #4 on the UK Singles chart. The third and final single released from the album was the ballad "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye", that peaked at #3 on the UK Singles charts.
A companion video titled Non-Stop Exotic Video Show was released alongside the album and featured videos directed by Tim Pope. The video generated some controversy in Britain, mainly due to a scandal involved with the "Sex Dwarf" clip. The original version of the music video was confiscated by police and censored before it was even released. A re-filmed "Sex Dwarf" appeared in Non-Stop Exotic Video Show featuring Almond dressed in a tuxedo, directing a symphony orchestra of transvestites.
The album reached #5 on the UK, #34 on the Australian and #7 on the New Zealand Albums charts.
