Double Allergic is the second studio album by Australian rock band Powderfinger, originally released in September 1996 via Polydor Records.
Powderfinger were an Australian rock band that formed in Brisbane in 1989. Their line-up from 1992 until their break up in 2010 was Bernard Fanning (vocals), Darren Middleton (guitars), Ian Haug (guitars), John Collins (bass) and Jon Coghill (drums).
Double Allergic was the album that broke the band into the mainstream and set Powderfinger on course to dominate the Australian musical landscape for more than a decade.
The band chose to work with Australian producer and sound engineer Tim Whitten on the album. The results were well received by the music public and critics alike. Many commented on the sound the band had achieved on the album with there being more “space” on the songs, without being overcrowded.
The first single released from the album was “Pick You Up” which peaked at #23 on the Australian Singles chart and appeared at #6 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1996. The second single “D.A.F.” peaked at #39 on the Singles chart and at #18 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1996. The third single “Living Type” also charted at #42 and was the third song to appear on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1996 at #32. The fourth single “Take Me In” did not make the singles chart.
Reinforced by relentless touring at the time – the album holds a very special place in the hearts and music collections of hundreds of thousands of fans.
The album itself peaked at #4 on the Australian Albums chart, spent 33 weeks in the Top 50, and has gone onto sell more than 210,000 copies. It featured at #44 on the ARIA year-end Albums charts in 1996 and at #53 in the 1997 year-end charts.
