Diesel And Dust is the sixth studio album by Australian rock band Midnight Oil, originally released in August 1987 via Sprint and CBS Records.

Midnight Oil are an Australian rock band that evolved from a band formed around 1972 called Farm that comprised Rob Hirst (drums), Andrew James (bass) and Jim Moginie (guitars / keyboards). Peter Garrett who was studying at the ANU answered an advertisement placed by the band for a lead singer and passed the audition and by 1975 the band was gigging around the East Coast of Australia.

Martin Rotsey (guitar) joined the band in 1977 and they released their debut album in 1978 Midnight Oil via their own independent record label, Powderworks. James was forced to retire in 1980 due to ill health and was replaced by Peter Gifford and he in turn left the band in 1987 to be replaced by Bones Hillman.

Midnight Oil is more than just a rock band, carving out a unique sound combined with a high octane energy live performance show, together with passionate activism for causes such as indigenous rights and environmentalism.

Diesel and Dust originated from a tour the band had undertaken in 1986 of outback Australia with Warumpi Band and Gondwanaland. The band played to remote Indigenous Australian communities, seeing first hand the seriousness of issues related to health, living standards, dispossession and land rights.

The band recorded the album in Australia with British producer Warne Livesey. Diesel and Dust is a concept album about the struggles of Indigenous Australians and environmental causes, issues important to the band.

The first single “The Dead Heart” and the second single “Beds Are Burning” deal with the issue of Indigenous land rights, both of which charted on the US Singles charts, reaching #53 and #17 respectively. Although the album focused on the need for recognition by white Australia of past injustices involving the Indigenous Australians, and the need for reconciliation, the album resonated with the music public in other countries, such as the US and UK.

The album reached #1 in Australia, #21 in the US and #19 in the UK.

According to Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, Diesel and Dust showed "Midnight Oil had reached the peak of its powers with the release of the groundbreaking ... album. ... it is arguably one of the greatest Australian albums of all time. Powerful, dynamic and passionate songs like 'Beds are Burning', 'Put Down that Weapon', 'Dreamworld', 'The Dead Heart' and 'Sell My Soul' were statements of intent and a call to action backed by the strength of their convictions…”

In 1989, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #13 on their list of the 100 Best Albums of the 1980s. In October 2010 it was listed at #1 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums.
