Lionel Richie - Dancing On The Ceiling

Dancing On The Ceiling is the third solo studio album by American R&B singer Lionel Richie, originally released in August 1986 via Motown Records.

Lionel Richie had been a member of the band the Commodores in the 1970s and had gained some prominence in this group. He left the Commodores in 1982 to pursue a solo career and had two hit albums, Lionel Richie (1982) and Can’t Slow Down (1983).

He composed and released a song for the movie White Nights in 1985, “Say You, Say Me” which became a huge hit both in the US and internationally. The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song as well.

Work started on his third solo album in 1985, which was tentatively to be called Say You, Say Me. However he decided that he was not comfortable with the direction the album was heading and wrote a number of new songs for the album. The album title was changed to Dancing On The Ceiling, and the title track was released as the second single from the album in July 1986.

The album was another runaway commercial success, reaching #1 on the US Billboard 200 Albums charts and #2 in Australia and #2 in the UK. The album went on to sell more than 4 million copies in the US.

It was to be his last studio album for ten years as he took a break from the music business after this album was released.
