VII: Sturm und Drang is the seventh studio album by American heavy metal band Lamb of God, released in July 2015 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Formed in 1994 (as Burn the Priest), Lamb of God consists of vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler. The band have released several well regarded albums, recieving Grammy Award nominations in 2010 and 2011 for songs from their 2009 Wrath, and again in 2016 for their song "512", and along with bands such as Pantera, Machine Head, and Biohazard, Lamb of God are considered to be a significant part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement.
Recorded in California at NRG Recording Studios, Los Angeles, and Suburban Soul Studios, Torrance, VII: Sturm und Drang is Lamb of God's first album since their hiatus following vocalist Randy Blythe's legal troubles in the Czech Republic. Taking its name from the German literary movement of the same name, Sturm und Drang (Storm and Drive) is an album about human's reacting under extreme conditions, with Blythe's lyrics referencing things that "affected him very deeply" such as his time in a Czech prison, the track "Still Echoes" drawing inspiration from the history of Pankrác Prison, and "512" a contemplation of how the experience was changing him, written in cell number 512.
Lamb of God also called the album "the most cohesive record the band has done in a long time", with Blythe writing "90 percent" of the lyrics as well as main songwriters Mark Morton and Willie Adler working in collaboration on all of the tracks instead of writing songs individually, and that due to these reasons, "the record is much, much stronger for it" and is less "schizophrenic" than previous albums.
Upon release, VII: Sturm und Drang reached No. 3 on the US Billboard 200, No. 1 in Canada, and No. 2 in Australia.
Five singles were released from the album: "Still Echoes", "512", "Overlord", "Erase This", and "Embers".
