Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is the seventh studio album by Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, released in November 2015 via Flightless Records.

Formed in Melbourne in 2010 by Ambrose Kenny Smith (vocals, harmonica, synthesizer), Cook Craig (guitar, bass guitar), Eric Moore (drums, percussion, theremin), Joey Walker (guitar, vocals), Lucas Skinner (bass guitar), Michael Cavanaugh (drums) and Stu Mackenzie (vocals, Guitar, Flute). The band are noted for their energetic live performances and their prolific recording output, releasing eight albums since 2012.

Their early work saw them primarily perform in a style that blended 1960’s surf music, garage rock and psychedelic rock, however they have since added acid rock and krautrock to their repertoire.

After dazzling fans of long, twisting, freak-out jams with their epic Quarters album, the ever-whimsical King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard make a stylistic left turn on Paper Mâché Dream Balloon.

Recorded mainly on acoustic instruments, liberally spiced with flutes, violins, and harmonicas, and full of concise, quietly hooky tunes, the record sounds like an eccentric batch of back porch pop. Dig below the surface though, and it’s a lot darker throughout Paper Maché Dream Balloon.

It’s constructed mainly through frontman Stu Mackenzie’s pointed lyricism. Where before he might have yelped and cackled his way through his tales of woe amidst wave after wave of fuzz, Paper Maché’s softer approach lends more malice to the operation. Beach-pop harmonies and the twinkle of a recorder frame Bone’s tale of chewing through limbs bright pop badge in presentation, Paranormal Activity in execution, it’s a record built on haunting contrast.

From the opening “Sense” right through to the end, the group sets a laid-back, relaxed mood. Unlike previous albums, the band seems content to deliver songs that are easily accessed and simple to break down instead of jumping from one idea to the next.

Many of the tracks have big, sunny hooks that can bring smiles on a rainy day (“Time = Fate”, “Most Of What I Like”), while the rest are sweet enough to worry a diabetic (especially the title track and the lovely “Dirt”). Even with the calmer, less frantic approach the band takes, there is still enough weirdness on display to keep things very interesting. “Trapdoor”, for one, is the kind of tripped-out, goofy jam the band specializes in, and even the songs that sound pretty normal have a little bit of oddness creeping around the edges. By the time it skips over to the children’s television, beach holiday soundtrack of “Cold Cadaver” it’s all sunny days and skipping ropes once more. You’ve never heard a jollier ode to a dead body.

Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is undoubtedly one of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s more confident statements yet. Taking a step back from their hundred-mile-an-hour psych-thrash and shaking their own foundations, it’s a record that should finally prove them to be every bit as brilliant as their name is daft.

This album is a 2015 reissue on orange coloured vinyl with a printed inner sleeve and download code, pressed in the US via ATO Records.
