Gordi - Our Two Skins

Our Two Skins is the second studio album by Australian folktronica singer songwriter Gordi, released in June 2020 via Jagjaguwar Records.

Gordi (Sophie Paton) is based in Sydney and came to prominence through triple j Unearthed, eventually being signed to the US label Jagjaguwar and Liberation Music in Australia in 2016. Her debut album Reservoir (2017) was recorded across multiple continents with a range of world-class musicians and producers Tim Anderson (Solange/Banks), Ali Chant (Perfume Genius/PJ Harvey) and Alex Somers (Sigur Ros).

Our Two Skins is the second studio album from Sydney-via-Canowindra musician Gordi.

The intimate yet sprawling eleven track offering was born from a period of inner turmoil for Gordi. Having finally completed her medical exams after years of painstaking study, and also in the midst of ending a safe, long-term relationship, she was grappling with a new truth in her identity and sexuality.

At the same time, she was dealing with the devastating loss of her beloved grandma and family matriarch. It was a turbulent, unsettled and isolating period.

The album is inspired by the idea that there's nothing to hide behind and explores those feelings of isolation and crippling anxiety. Our Two Skins chronicles this intense chapter of Gordi's life, as she renegotiated who she was and how she fit into the world.

Our Two Skins was recorded at her parents farm in Canowindra, with the help of Bon Iver production duo Chris Messina and Zach Hanson. There was no phone reception, no wi-fi, and only an outhouse located in a nearby shearing shed. If you listen closely to the album, you can hear elements from the farm shining through.

Singles released from this album record include "Sandwiches", released in February, accompanied by a music video filmed in Payten's hometown; "Aeroplane Bathroom", released in March with a music video filmed in Bangkok; "Volcanic", released in May; and "Unready" and "Extraordinary Life", both released in June 2020.

This album is a limited edition on orange with blue swirl coloured vinyl, pressed in Europe via Jagjaguwar Records.
