Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Seventh Tree is the fourth studio album by English synth pop music duo Goldfrapp, originally released in February 2008 via Mute Records.

Goldfrapp are an English electronic duo from London, formed in 1999, consisting of of Alison Goldfrapp (vocals, synthesizer) and Will Gregory (synthesizer).

Seventh Tree marked a significant shift from the previous two albums Black Cherry (2003) and Supernature (2005) with the duo moving away from the dance infused synth pop atmosphere of these two albums to a much more relaxed album, filled with acoustic guitars, strings, synths and Alison’s beautiful voice creating a summer haze feeling.

The album opens with the acoustic guitar driven “Clowns” with Alison’s voice floating like clouds above the backing which gradually adds strings and bass to the mix, setting the scene for the album. “Little Bird” continues the laid back feeling with a Beatleseque vibe opening that casts the listener back to Strawberry Fields Forever, flowing into a psychedelic trip hop ending.

“Road To Somewhere” opens with a cello backing and builds with layered vocals, strings, bass and keyboards and Goldfrapp sounds so expressive on “Eat Yourself”.

Other highlights include “A&E”, “Cologne Cerrone Houdini” and “Some People”, which builds in the chorus with drums, bass and layered strings and towards the end the backing fades back leaving just her voice and final piano notes; very moving.

The album became their most critically acclaimed album since their debut Felt Mountain (2000) and reached #2 on the UK and #11 on the Australian albums charts.

This album is a 2021 reissue on yellow coloured vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with a printed inner sleeve and exclusive art print, pressed in Europe via Mute and BMG.
