The Harrow & The Harvest is the fifth solo studio album by American folk singer-songwriter Gillian Welch, originally released in June 2011 via Acony Records.

Gillian Welch performs with her musical partner David Rawlings, and all the songs on this album are written together. There was a considerable gap between this album and its predecessor Soul Journey (2003), which Welch put down to being unsatisfied with the material they were writing. She has been quoted about this: "Our songcraft slipped and I really don't know why. It's not uncommon. It's something that happens to writers. It's the deepest frustration we have come through, hence the album title." The writing process involved "this endless back and forth between the two of us… it’s our most intertwined, co-authored, jointly-composed album."

About the recording process, Welch shared the following, “…The songs are mostly first and second takes, and Dave composed some of the music spontaneously in the studio. It was very freeing. We learned to accept mistakes and rough edges, because those didn't impede what the heart of the matter was….".

The album received universal acclaim upon release with several music publications listing the album in their Top 50 Album lists for 2011. Mojo magazine rated the album 5 stars (out of 5) and Thom Jurek of Allmusic wrote that the album "…is stunning for its intimacy, its lack of studio artifice, its warmth and its timeless, if hard won, songcraft…”.

The album reached #20 on the US Billboard 200. #1 on the US Folk, #25 on the UK and #11 on the Australian Albums charts.

The album was nominated for Best Folk Album, and Best Engineered Album for the 54th Grammy Awards.

This album is released on vinyl for the very first time!
