Good Morning To The Night is a remix album by British singer-songwriter Elton John and Australian electronic duo Pnau, originally released in July 2012 via Mercury Records in the UK and Cassablanca Records in the US.
Elton John listened to a Pnau album during one of his visits to Australia and was immediately impressed, signing them to his Rocket Management label. He granted Pnau access to his original master tape recordings from his 1970s catalogue and the band members spent time listening to all his early albums, focusing on the less commercial numbers to identify elements of songs that could be re-worked together to create a new set of remixed material.
The resulting album Good Morning To The Night contains eight remixed tracks mixing elements of Elton John’s lesser-know material, creating an uplifting and moving piece of work. The title track is based around a line from the song “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” that is catchy and integrates the keyboards from “Funeral From A Friend” seamlessly.
The single “Sad” released from the album is another dance track that cruises along combining melodies from “Curtains” and “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word”, making a completely new song out of the snippets from the originals. “Telegraph To The Afterlife” evokes moods of Pink Floyd with the eerie vocal line “Hello, Hello, Hello”, and the album closes with another mood piece “Sixty”, a re-working of “Sixty Years On” combining snippets of the original studio recording, plus live recordings made in 1970 and in 1986 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
This is an imaginative remix album that avoids the commercial hits of Elton John, creating something refreshing and charming.
The album debuted at #1 on the UK Albums chart and also reached #40 in Australia.
Check out the tracks: “Sad”; “Good Morning To The Night”; “Sad (Live)”; “Good Morning To The Night (Live)”; “Telegraph To The Afterlife” and “Karmatron”.
