One Night Only: The Greatest Hits is the fourth live album by British singer-songwriter Elton John, originally released in November 2000 via Mercury Records.
This live album was recorded on 20 and 21 October 2000 at Madison Square Garden. An extended version was also released as a DVD, entitled One Night Only: The Greatest Hits Live at Madison Square Garden.
The album title is "one night only" because the recording equipment failed to tape most of the audio from the first night, leaving only the second night to be recorded as an album. In the US, it was certified gold in July 2001 by the RIAA.
This concert marked the return of Nigel Olsson on drums to the Elton John Band, who has subsequently been a continuous member of the band from this point until the present day. The musicians supporting Elton in the show were:
- Davey Johnstone - guitars, vocals
- John Jorgenson - guitars, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, saxophone, vocals
- Bob Birch - bass guitar, vocals
- Guy Babylon - keyboards, vocals
- Nigel Olsson - drums, percussion, vocals
- Curt Bisquera - drums
- John Mahon - percussion, vocals
- Ken Stacey - background vocals, additional guitar
- Billy Trudel - background vocals
The concert featured some special guests joining Elton on stage including Kiki Dee to sing their 1976 #1 hit “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. Other standouts are Anastacia on “I’m Still Standing” and Mary J. Blige on “I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues”. The set list features his best known songs, mostly from the early to mid-1970s period of his career.
This album is being released in 2017 for the very first time on vinyl, with remastered audio.
This limited double album 2LP record set is on 180 gram vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with remastered audio and digital download code, pressed in Europe via Mercury Records.
