Little Fictions is the seventh studio album by British alternative rock band Elbow, released in February 2017 via Polydor Records.
Elbow are an English rock band consisting of Guy Garvey (vocals, guitar), Craig Potter (keyboard, piano, backing vocals), Mark Potter (guitar, backing vocals) and Pete Turner (bass guitar, backing vocals). They have played together since 1990, adopting the Elbow band name in 1997. The band have released seven studio albums, Asleep in the Back (2001), Cast of Thousands (2003), Leaders of the Free World (2005), The Seldom Seen Kid (2008), Build a Rocket Boys! (2011), The Take Off and Landing of Everything (2014), and Little Fictions (2017). Their studio albums have all reached the top 15 of the British album charts and in 2008, the band won the Mercury Music Prize for their album The Seldom Seen Kid, and in 2009 they won the Brit Award for Best British Group.
Little Fictions was recorded in Scotland and Manchester and sees the band collaborate with the string players of The Hallé Orchestra, the Hallé Ancoats Community Choir, members of London Contemporary Voices and session drummer Alex Reeves.
The album was produced by Craig Potter, who produced their last three albums.
Little Fictions is therefore more than just yet another brilliant elbow album. In many ways it marks the start of a new chapter for the band, characterised by a rediscovery of shared purpose in doing the thing that has always brought them together, the place that Mark describes as ‘the creative space where we all meet’.
The lead single from the album, Magnificent (She Says), was released in December 2016 and the second single, All Disco, followed in January 2017, and was inspired by American musician Black Francis of the band Pixies.
The third single, Gentle Storm, was released in January 2017 with an accompanying music video directed by Kevin Godley. The video was inspired by the song Cry by Godley & Creme, and starred English actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
The album peaked at #1 on the UK Albums charts, making it their second album to top the UK charts. In Australia the album reached #16 and in the US, it reached #172 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart.
