Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is the sixth studio album by British rock band Arctic Monkeys, released in May 2018 via Domino Recording Company.

Produced by James Ford and the band’s frontman Alex Turner, the album was recorded in Los Angeles, Paris and London.

Their first release since their 2013 album, AM finds the band intent on continuing to explore new musical terrain with each album. Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino ups the ante in a big way; it is a bold and brilliant album reflecting Turner’s ever more comprehensive creative vision.

The album was written by Turner on a piano, and features a lush lounge pop and space pop sound with jazz influences; a departure from the bands previous guitar-heavy work. Its lyrical content draws heavily from science fiction and film, exploring consumerism, politics, religion, technology.

Turner cited various films as influencing the album's lyrics, including the works of Jean-Pierre Melville, Spirits of the Dead and World on a Wire. Turner commented that he took a different approach to writing lyrics than on previous albums, noting that he "became less concerned on this album [with] compartmentalising every idea to the point where each song became this episode that starts and ends in three minutes", with Leonard Cohen inspiring a different perspective on each lyric's relationship with its context.
