The Razors Edge is the twelfth studio album (eleventh international) by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released in September 1990 via Albert Productions.
Although AC/DC's popularity had decreased by the early '90s, the band still had a lot of life left in it. Arguably their strongest album in over half a decade, The Razor's Edge is quintessential AC/DC - rowdy, abrasive, unapologetically fun metal full of blistering power chords, memorable hooks, and testosterone-driven lyrics.
Still, the road to the The Razors Edge wasn’t entirely a smooth one. Before they’d even started thinking about a follow-up to Blow Up Your Video, co-founding guitarist Malcolm Young bowed out of the tour, checking into rehab to sort out a long alcohol dependency. Nephew Stevie Young, who’d later return to the lineup after health issues forced Malcolm’s retirement, subbed in.
Next out the door was drummer Simon Wright, who’d joined after Phil Rudd was fired in 1983. Wright quit in order to join Dio for the recording of their Lock Up The Wolves LP, and was replaced by session vet Chris Slade - but there was still more upheaval on the way, as singer Brian Johnson had to take a temporary leave of absence to deal with his divorce. This put an added burden on Malcolm and Angus Young when it came to songwriting, as Johnson had been responsible for lyrics since joining the band in the wake of Bon Scott‘s death.
Lead singer Brian Johnson sounds more inspired than he had since 1983's Flick Of The Switch, and lead guitarist Angus Young isn't about to take any prisoners on such hard-hitting material as "Shot Of Love", the menacing title song, and the appropriately titled "Got You By The Balls”.
Although not quite in a class with Back In Black, Highway To Hell, or Let There Be Rock - all of which would, for novices, serve as fine introductions to the distinctive band - The Razor's Edge was a welcome addition to AC/DC's catalog.
Handed complete control of AC/DC’s creative reins, the Youngs seized them with gusto.
Check out the tracks: “Thunderstruck”; “Moneytalks” and “Are You Ready”.
