The Awakening is the fifth studio album by Australian blues musician Matt Taylor, originally released in July 1997 via forever Records.
Considered the father of Australian blues, Matt Taylor began playing in The Bay City Union, one of nation’s first electric blues bands, before joining Wild Cherries and later the blues band Chain in September 1970. In between stints with various cults, over the years he has toured and recorded with Chain, formed Western Flyer, recorded five solo albums, and played with BB King, Muddy Waters, Albert King, John Mayall, Canned Heat and many more critically acclaimed musicians.
As Matt Taylor was writing The Awakening, 39 people killed themselves in California so they could join the crew of a spacecraft following the Hale-Bopp Comet. According to Matt Taylor this collection of songs is to inform those who are awakening that you don’t need wild eyed messiahs and gurus, and that you only need to understand your own life, listen to your own thoughts and re-evaluate your deepest beliefs.
Inspired by the blues Matt Taylor listened to as a 14 year old, which he described as a part of his awakening, The Awakening is an accoustic, delta blues inspired, album featuring Matt Taylor on guitar, harmonica, and vocals.
Matt Taylor wrote on his website about this album: "...I was at a gig selling CD's during the break a young man asked if I had a copy of the Awakening. He said he bought a copy the day it was released, didn't like it so he gave it to a friend. A few days later he couldn't get the songs out of his head so he went to get the CD back, his friend wouldn't part with it. I took this as a compliment."
Check out the tracks "Mind Wide Open", "Long Dark Night of the Soul", "AM Boogie" and "Awakening".
This CD comes in a jewel case with full colour printed lyric booklet and was made in Australia via Forever Records.
