Sound As Ever is the debut studio album by Australian alternative rock band You Am I, originally released in October 1993 via rA / rooArt Records.

You Am I were formed in Sydney in 1989 by Tim Rogers on vocals, guitar, mellotron and Hammond organ; his older brother Jaimme Rogers on drums; and Nick Tischler on bass guitar. At an early gig, a fan provided "a big spiritual spiel about '.... I am you... you am i...'. The band took that as the inspiration for the working title" for the group's name. This initial line-up was short-lived, Jaimme left before the end of the following year and was replaced by Mark Tunaley on drums. In the band's 1993 song, "Jaimme's Got a Gal", Tim explained why his brother left.

By April 1992 Tischler had left the band "because he didn't think he could fulfill Tim's vision". He was replaced by their previous live sound mixer, Andy Kent, on bass guitar. In May they released a five-track EP, Goddamn, which was produced by Tom Kazas. By that stage, Rogers had established his credentials as a fine songwriter and the band a reputation as an exciting, dynamic live act.

They are the first Australian band to have released three successive albums, which have each debuted at the number-one position on the ARIA Albums Chart.

In 1993 Grunge was taking the world by storm, and while Sound As Ever isn’t “Grunge”, the early rock sounds of You Am I are rooted in the dirty sounds and lack of production values that dominated the music scene in the early 90s.

Sound As Ever opens with the grimy bass which oozes grunge all over “Coprolalia”. Driven by the heavy bass kicks of drummer Mark Tunaley, frontman and song smith Tim Rogers belts out the woes of a teenager who can’t be bothered to wake up in the morning. This album hosts what some fans call the quintessential You Am I song, “Berlin Chair” where Rogers laments on the pains of being used till he breaks, and understanding that he’s the loser. “Adam’s Ribs” covers Rogers observations of negative body image.

Not all the tracks feature the depressing themes of youth though. Upbeat tunes like “Forever And Easy” and “Trainspottin’” are sung in a more positive and ‘happy’ attitude by Rogers and how things can get better.

Jaimme’s Got A Gal” is the story of your best mates new girlfriend stealing him away from you. Based on the real life departure of pre-album member Jaimme (brother of Tim Rogers), Rogers reminisces over times spent together while the band drums out a sombre melody to match the themes.

Slower tracks like “Ordinary” hint at the softer direction Rogers takes in his later solo works outside of the band as well as the less abrasive sounds that will feature on the bands later records.

Sound As Ever shows a band in its infancy, but with so much room to grow, and over the coming years, growing’s all they did.
