Goats is the debut studio album by Australian-Cretan folk world duo, Xylouris White, released in November 2014 via Other Music Recording Co. and Fat Possum Records.

About George Xylouris:

Giorgos Xylouris is a Cretan lute player and singer who was born into a musical family and grew up in Anogeia, a mountain village in Crete with a rich musical culture. Xylouris started playing the Cretan lute at an early age, guided by his uncle Psarogiannis. Giorgos lived for eight years in Melbourne, Australia, where he formed the Xylouris Ensemble. Two of the Xylouris Ensemble's albums, Antipodes (1998) and Drakos (1999), were nominated for the ARIA Fine Arts Awards in Australia.

Xylouris plays the lute as a solo instrument, in contrast to the traditional accompaniment role the lute has in Cretan music and in this role Giorgos is peerless. In the less usual role of lead instrument he has made the laouto a melodic instrument to frame and adorn song. Xylouris has performed extensively both in his native Crete, in his second home Australia, and internationally at world music festivals, collaborating with musicians from both folk and rock traditions.

About Jim White:

Jim White is an Australian drummer, songwriter, and producer. In 1992 he formed Dirty Three, an instrumental rock band, with fellow mainstays Warren Ellis on violin and bass guitar; and Mick Turner on electric and bass guitars. In Dirty Three, White shares songwriting duties with Ellis and Turner. White has also played with various other artists including The Blackeyed Susans, Kim Salmon's STM (both with Ellis); The Tren Brothers (with Turner); and United States singer-songwriter, Nina Nastasia. In May 2007 Nastasia and White issued an album, You Follow Me.

About the Album:

As George Xylouris, drove Jim White from home to the studio, they saw a lot of goats on Crete’s rocky hillsides. Georges is Crete’s master of the lute. Jim is best known as the drummer of Dirty Three. Goats, jim thought, would be a good name for the recording they were about to make. Goats are quintessentially Cretan animals. They love the high crags. They take risks, calmly look about for new dangers.

Goats, Jim and George agreed were a metaphor for the music they were about to invent, music that would fuse traditional Cretan music with rock.

Both traditions would of course have to adapt, really adapt, but both these goats are lovers of going right up to the edge and nearly over.

Matt Evans from The List reviewed the album with 4 out of 5 stars and concludes "...Here, the usual drummer / soloist relationship is gorgeously inverted. Xylouris, strictly disciplined but endlessly expressive, generally holds everything together, while White seems perpetually on the verge of cutting loose and running wild through the Dikti mountains, though he resists the urge … for now. It all makes for a wondrous and perfectly balanced partnership."
