The Magician's Birthday is the fifth studio album by British hard rock band Uriah Heep, released in November 1972 by Bronze Records.

Uriah Heep formed in London in 1969. The band like many of its contempories of the day experimented with its sound, and were variously categorized as heavy metal and progressive heavy rock. Few bands captured the sound of classic '70s rock better than Uriah Heep did with their grandiose, melodic and progressive heavy rock. Twelve of the band's albums have made it to the UK Albums Chart, and fifteen the Billboard 200, and were one of the top rock bands of the 1970s.

Uriah Heep's audience declined by the 1980s, to the point where they became essentially a cult band in the United Kingdom and United States. The band maintains a significant following and performs at arena-sized venues in Europe, Japan and Scandinavia. They have sold over 40 million albums worldwide.

The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, particularly between ’76-’88, following the departure of vocalist David Byron in 1976. with guitarist Mick Box the only constant member. The current lineup has been relatively stable since 1988.

It was no doubt that Heep were the most creative and successful part of their career as the classic Demons And Wizards was followed up later the same year by the equally strong The Magician's Birthday. The concept was "based loosely on a short story" written by Ken Hensley in June and July 1972

Hensley had now introduced moog to the sound, creating some awesome atmosphere on The Magician's Birthday, as shown on tracks like Tales and Echoes In The Dark.

Album opener Sunrise ranks high up there as one of Heep's strongest songs. Spider Woman was the first number in a light and catchy boogie-style that the group would explore more on later albums. Rain is a wonderful ballad consisting of nothing else than piano, vibes and Byron's great voice. Sweet Lorraine was the hit-single from the album and features a catchy chorus and a simple synth-theme.

The 10-minute The Magician's Birthday title track tells the story of a magician's birthday party that becomes the scene of a fight between good and evil. Each part of the song is a perfect musical description of the story as it evolves. A long and raw solo from Mick Box that is driven forward by some furious drumming gives the impression of a hell of a battle! Things calm down a bit to the end where the victorious magician sings scornful to his enemies.
