Full Moon Fever is the debut solo album by American singer-songwriter Tom Petty, originally released in April 1989 via MCA Records.

Tom Petty decided to put work with his band The Heartbreakers on hold in 1987, and work on some solo material. The basic material was recorded in a relaxed atmosphere in Mike Campbell’s garage studio, with friends contributing to the recording process including some members of The Heartbreakers (Mike Campbell, Benmont Tech, Howie Epstein) and the Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne).

The recording of Full Moon Fever was disrupted by the recording sessions of the Traveling Wilburys first studio album, which was released ahead of this solo album, in 1988.

The album was produced by Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. Lynne’s production influence is very much evident on the album, resulting in a much more polished sounding album than his prior recorded material. The layering of backing vocals and keyboards gave the record a Beatlesque feeling to it, and a number of the songs were co-written by Petty and Lynne.

The album explores his musical roots and pays tribute to many of the artists that influenced his musical learning, such as his cover of the Byrds song “Feel A Whole Lot Better”, and his tribute to Del ShannonRunnin' Down A Dream”. Other tracks such as “Free Fallin’” show Petty reminiscing on nostalgia on his rise to fame. There is a Bo Diddley style rhythm on “A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own”, and a drumming style reminiscent of Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” on “The Apartment Song”.

The album was released to widespread critical acclaim and coming on the back of the enormous success of the Traveling Wilburys, propelled the album up the charts across the globe. The album has become Petty’s most successful album commercially, selling more than 5 million copies in the US alone. The album peaked at #3 in the US, #8 in the UK and #13 in Australia.

Full Moon Fever was ranked #92 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s.
