Mojo is the twelfth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, originally released in June 2010 via Reprise Records.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been delivering a high level of no-frills, classy, and reconstituted American garage rock throughout their career. Petty often gets lumped in with artists like Bruce Springsteen, whose careful and worked-over lyrics carry a kind of instant nostalgia. Petty's songwriting at its best however cleverly bounces off of romance clichés, often with a desperate, lustful drawl and sneer, and he’s usually been more concerned with the here and now than he is about musing about what’s been abused and lost in contemporary America, although he's certainly not blind to it. Petty has always been more immediate than that -- until now, that is.

Mojo was the first album Petty’s done with the Heartbreakers since 2002’s sly The Last DJ. This time out he’s tackling the blues, trying to graft the Heartbreakers' (Mike Campbell on guitar, Scott Thurston on guitar and harmonica, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Steve Ferrone on drums) patented 1960s garage sound to the Chicago blues sound of Chess Records in the 1950s. It certainly works, mostly because this is a wonderful band, but moreover, because it was recorded mostly live, with very few overdubs. What you hear is what the band played in the studio, in a single take.

The mid-album triple shot is as straight-ahead blues as Petty and the band have ever written. “I Should Have Known It” is a heavy, bluesy rocker, with wailing and flogging guitar, a close cousin to Petty’s classic British blues-rock heroes. “U.S. 41” and “Take My Time” ply into 12-bar blues and Deep South traditionalism. The slow, country-tinged, sweet lovers ballad “No Reason To Cry” is laced with sentimental, steel guitar, while “Lover’s Touch” is a low down, aching for my baby blues. “Let Yourself Go” is a Howlin’ Wolf style shuffle and is every bit as fun as its title suggests.

The band offers some of the best songs of their career on Mojo, both lyrically and musically. There’s the good time, foot-shuffling funk of opener “Jefferson Jericho Blues”, full of rattling piano and guitar, as well as rolling harmonica harmony. It’s a story song of “poor Tom Jefferson” and his affair with the “little maid out back”. “First Flash Of Freedom” changes gear dramatically, it’s their foray into the dual guitars and swirling keyboards of psychedelic jam rock.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers certainly got back their Mojo working on this new album. It has some of the best written songs he’s released and, song for song, it one of the finest recording of the band’s career. Mojo showed that Petty and the Heartbreakers as one of classic rocks pioneers they had no intention of becoming a nostalgia act.

Check out the tracks: “Good Enough”; “I Should Have Known It”; “First Flash Of Freedom” and “Don’t Pull Me Over”.

This double LP housed in a gatefold sleeve with remastered audio and lyric sheet is pressed in the USA on black vinyl.
