Vicennial: 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band is a studio album by New Orleans based Hot 8 Brass Band, released in October 2015 by Tru Thoughts Records.

Few acts could have endured the trials and tribulations that the Hot 8 Brass Band has had to deal with and still come out after twenty years with all horns blazing. There is no need to revisit the horrors of the past, better to focus on the indefatigable spirit that this legendary and cherished New Orleans institution displays.

This anniversary album contains a raucous mix of new songs and newly recorded versions of some of their classic tracks. Fittingly, and in total accord with the band’s community minded outlook, former bandmates and family members of deceased members (ranging from grandparents to siblings) were all invited into the recording studio to contribute. What results is a funked up jazz and hip-hop explosion that epitomises the jubilation and celebration of life that is New Orleans brass music.

There is more of a focus on ensemble vocals on several of the re-recordings, particularly on “Get Up” and “Sexual Healing”, and it works a treat; and don’t get affronted at a Marvin Gaye staple (or Temptations…or Stevie Wonder) being turned inside out, embrace the vitality and exuberance that turns these songs into totally different beasts.

Of the new recordings, “Royal Garden Blues” is a swinging Dixieland delight that was originally recorded over a century ago (not by the Hot 8!), and the Temptations’ immortal “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” has been turned into a rambunctious showstopper that would have sat nicely on the Shaft soundtrack.

There’s nothing sophisticated about Vicennial, it’s raw and immediate, music for the feet, music to march to, music for the people, it’s how it should be, gloriously celebrating the past with one foot firmly placed in the future; if you’re going to do a nostalgia trip then this is the way to do it. And, if you’ve never been to New Orleans at JazzFest time, then here’s your chance to attend it in your own living room.

For those unfamiliar with the Hot 8 and its rich history, this is a good place to start.

This double album 2LP record set is on black vinyl with a digital download code, pressed in the UK.
