Songs Of Praise is the debut studio album by British post punk rock band Shame, released in January 2018 via Dead Oceans Records.

Comprised of vocalist Charlie Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist Josh Finerty, and drummer Charlie Forbes, the London-based five-piece began as school boys. From the outset, Shame built the band up from a foundation of DIY ethos while citing Eddy Current Suppression Ring and The Fall among their biggest musical influences.

Utilising both the grit and sincerity of that musical background, Shame carved out a niche in the South London music scene and then barrelled fearlessly into the angular, thrashing post-punk that would go on to make up Songs of Praise, their Dead Oceans debut. From “Gold Hole,” a tongue-in-cheek take-down of rock narcissism, to lead single “Concrete” detailing the overwhelming moment of realising a relationship is doomed, to the frustrated “Tasteless” taking aim at the monotony of people droning through their day-to-day, Songs of Praise never pauses to catch its breath.

Upon its release Songs of Praise received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 88, based on 11 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".

In a 5 (out of 5) star rating, Tim Peakcock for Record Collector magazine wrote: “…Shame began life sharing rehearsal space with Fat White Family at Brixton’s Queen’s Head and they’ve gigged with all the current buzz-building London-centric types including Goat Girl, Dead Pretties and recent Domino signing Sorry.

Songs Of Praise, however, makes it abundantly clear that this talented young outfit won’t need to ride their contemporaries’ coat-tails from hereon in. Indeed, this dark horse of a debut isn’t just vastly superior to most of the recycled indie landfill swilling around – it’s one of the most emotionally-charged guitar-based debuts to be unleashed over the past 12 months.

As evinced by the likes of Friction and recent single Concrete, taut, muscular pop with an undertow of brooding angst is clearly Shame’s forte. Frontman Charlie Steen touts a nice line in Peter Perrett-esque fatalism (“I like you better when you’re not around”) and while his band’s dense, strident Sensurround can encompass everything from Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth (Dust On Trial) to Animals That Swim-style semi-spoken narratives (The Lick), there’s never any blatant tea-leaving and the end results are always shot through with the here and now.

All 10 tracks convince, but in the final analysis, it’s the twin epics Gold Hole and the devastating, suicide-related Angie that suggest Shame have the requisite sound, fury and intensity to make their mark in the long run. Watch this space…”
