Golden Sings That Have Been Sung is the fourth studio album by American progressive folk singer-songwriter Ryley Walker, released in August 2016 via Dead Oceans Records.

Ryley Walker is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Rockford, Illinois. He began his career in Chicago's independent music scene after moving there in the early 2010s and in 2014 released his debut album All Kinds Of You. This was followed in 2015 with his second LP Primrose Green and then by an instrumental album, recorded in collaboration with fellow Chicago musician Bill MacKay, entitled Land of Plenty which has been described as fingerstyle ballads, psychedelic waltzes, and raga-inspired blues. In 2016, Walker released his fourth album, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung, which was yet another change in his evolving sound.

For his fourth album, Walker uses most of the players that recorded his second studio album Primrose Hill. The musicians that recorded this album were:

  • Ryley Walker – acoustic guitars, vocals
  • Ben Boye – keyboards
  • Anton Hatwich – bass
  • Frank Rosaly – drums
  • Brian Sulpizo – electric guitars
  • Whitney Johnson – viola
  • Leroy Bach – guitars, keyboards, clarinet, percussion
  • Quin Kirchner – drums

The opening track The Halfwit In Me kicks off the album with a progressive folk feel, combining acoustic guitars with unusual chord and timing changes, and a rolling drum and bass line set up the backing for the second song A Choir Apart that continues the progressive almost psychedelic folk feeling for this album. Funny Thing She Said slows the mood and has a very sparse and effective backing arrangement interplaying guitars, keyboards, bass and drums to highlight his singing. Sullen Mind is one of the standout tracks for “The Captain” with free form jazz and progressive playing giving the song a spaced out feel that builds to a climax half way through the song continues an interplay of ups and downs to the end of the song, by which time the tempo has increased as the band jam their hearts out.

The Roundabout is another album highlight, an observational homage to Midwest blue-collar culture. Age Old Tale is the epic closing track that runs for more than eight minutes, with an unusual time signature and sparse backing riff of bass drums and guitar driving the song to the very end. It’s like he’s pushing boundaries and lets the music flow and ebb as the musicians feel, rather than being bound within the typical three-minute pop song formula.

“The Captain” was given this album as a Christmas present and it has been on the player ever since – a stand out album, well worth a listen.

At Metacritic the album was rated with a score of 80 out of 100 based on 16 reviews, which indicates “Generally Favourable Reviews”.
