Greatest Hits is the second “best-of” compilation album by American funk rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in November 2003 by Warner Bros. Records.

Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed in Los Angeles by singer Anthony Kiedis, guitarist Hillel Slovak, bassist Flea, and drummer Jack Irons, all of whom were classmates from Fairfax High School. Originally going under the band name of Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, their first performance was at the Rhythm Lounge club to a crowd of approximately 30 people, opening for Gary and Neighbour’s Voices. Inspired by punk funk acts like The Contortions and Defunkt, they “wrote” for the occasion, which involved the band improvising music while Anthony Kiedis rapped a peomhe had written called “Out In L.A.”. The performance was so lively, that the band was asked to return the following week, and due to this unexpected success, the band changed its name to Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing several more shows at various LA clubs and music venues.

The group's musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits is a compelling listen, culling tracks from the band's 1989 breakthrough, Mother's Milk, to its melodic 2002 release, By The Way. In some ways, one could view this as the best of the John Frusciante years, charting most of the band's work with the talented guitarist after the death of original member Hillel Slovak.

The tracks here are all hits, including such stellar singles as Give It Away, Under The Bridge, and Frusciante's first single after his phoenix-like resurrection from heroin addiction, Scar Tissue. Nothing from the Chili Peppers' rambunctious early efforts prior to signing with Warners appears on this hits collection. Nonetheless, Greatest Hits still portrays the band as one of the most consistently brilliant groups of its generation.

Helping to paint this picture are such solid cuts as the group's searing, albeit overplayed, 1989 cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground as well as their addition to the Coneheads movie soundtrack, Soul To Squeeze. My Friends is the sole cut to make it from the band's one-off effort with Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, One Hot Minute. Throw in two new tracks (Fortune Faded and Save The Population) that easily match the quality of the material collected here, and you've got one of the most consistently listenable Chili Pepper releases since Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Check out these tracks: Give It Away; Under The Bridge; Scar Tissue; Higher Ground; Breaking The Girl; Fortune Faded and Soul To Squeeze.

This double LP reissue on 140 gram grey marbled vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve is pressed in Europe.
