Nightlife is the seventh studio album by the British synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, originally released in October 1999 via Parlophone Records.

Nightlife followed their 1996 album Bilingual and incorporates a number of musical influences from trance to disco to dance-pop and country. The album evolved from material the band were working with for the stage musical that would eventually become Closer To Heaven (2001).

The album was produced by the Pet Shop Boys, Rollo, Craig Armstrong and David Morales. It also featured a duet with Kylie Minogue who was at that time out of a record contract. The song “In Denial” would become part of Kylie’s live set, featuring taped vocals from Neil Tennant.

The first single released from the album was the catchy “I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More” is classic PSB dance pop at it’s best, with a great string arrangement and a chorus that harks back to the style of their first couple of albums. The song peaked at #15 on the UK Singles Chart, #2 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, and #66 on the US Hot Singles Sales chart.

The second single “New York City Boy” exudes disco and recalls their smash cover of the Village People’s song “Go West”. The song features a chorus of male backing vocals and a catchy chorus, pure disco pop at its best. This single peaked at #14 on the UK Singles Chart, #1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart and #53 on the US Hot Singles Sales chart.

The third and final single from the album was “You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk”, a slower tempo song with a serious subject matter at the heart of the song.  This single peaked at #8 on the UK Singles chart and failing to make it to the US Singles charts. Perhaps the subject matter was a factor why the song didn’t chart in the US.

Other great songs on the album are “Closer To Heaven”, “For Your Own Good”, “In Denial” and “Happiness Is An Option”, which features a classical backing theme from Rachmaninoff.

The Pet Shop Boys are one of “The Captain’s” favourite bands, and this album stands as a great piece in their body of work.

Check out the tracks: “I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More”; “New York City Boy”; “You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk”; Closer To Heaven”, “For Your Own Good”, “In Denial” and “Happiness Is An Option”.

This LP record is on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl with a printed inner sleeve, featuring the new 2017 remaster, pressed in Europe.
