The Church is the fifth studio album by French electronic artist Mr Oizo, released in November 2014 by Brainfeeder Records.

Mr. Oizo is the stage name of French electronic musician and film director Quentin Dupieux. His pseudonym is a corruption of the French “oiseau”, meaning "bird".

Mr. Oizo is dance music for the unsettled in that there’s always a sense of unnerving activity going on in the background.

Sure he wants to make you dance, but he also wants to make you uncomfortable when doing it to the point you begin to question everything that’s been leading up to this point in time.

The Parisian’s ethos remains - get to the crux of the matter quick, march listeners into his electro-techno arcade, then pull the rug. A swig of absinthe and sugar, and it’s onto the next one.

The Church is a strange concoction of seemingly incoherent electronic beats that want to bring out the weird side in you. With a heavy splattering of synths, deformed rhythms and monstrous basslines, it’s a highly frenetic effort that tinkers between insanity and genius.

Opening track Bear Biscuit refuses the title of introduction, instantly forcing you into a universe where the laws of physics no longer seem to apply. Gripping yet refusing to settle down, it completely fucks with your bearings as you face a barrage of glitches, strange noises and creepy vocals that creates an unrepentant and powerful track to leave you feeling slightly scarred.

This feeling permeates throughout the rest of the album also, as he cuts through what’s acceptable and transmutes it into an uneasy yet compelling listen.

On iSoap for instance the funky guitars, laden with the minor chord progressions of the brass mess with you where you can’t quite put your finger on what’s happening.

Anyone wishing to hark back to his older material, will take solace in closing track The Church. It has that quintessential progressive synth line, hyped vocals and insane atmosphere that makes you want to mess something up.

Conversely, one of the most controlled tracks is Destop, which, while still at a certain level of high energy, is a more calming respite in the bigger picture. While only the third track in, after the first two, it’s a much needed break where you can sort of recover and take it all in.

Mr. Oizo’s music when first listening to it can seem a bit much to process yet after a few listens and developing a few mental tips, you can effectively get into the groove. Who knows why it’s so engrossing, it’s one of those things that you can’t quite understand but equally can’t get enough of.

Once you enter you won’t come out, well at least for a while and when you do, you come out a lot weirder. A glitchy cleansing, its lasting power is its ability to render you terrified and amazed, all at the same time, creating a vicious cycle that while may not make you feel better, will give you an interesting new insight into your surroundings.
