Solastalgia is the fifth studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, released in April 2018 via Eleven.

Solastalgia is Missy Higgins’ first album of new original material since The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle released in 2012. She released an album of cover songs Oz in 2014, which was an amazingly original and refreshing interpretation of a wide range of Australian compositions.

The album features the hit lead single “Futon Couch”, and sees her explore fresh territory both sonically and lyrically. The title of the album references an "existential distress caused by environmental change, such as mining or climate change".

About the single “Futon Couch”, Higgins is quoted as saying: "This is the happiest song on the record. It is the story of me meeting my husband in Broome. He was my good friend’s house mate and one day he walked into the living room where I was waiting for my friend. I sat on the futon couch making small-talk with him while he did the dishes and I thought: 'where did THIS guy come from and why is he so lovely and how can I surreptitiously arrange to hang out with him more?' After that day, I popped round for tea at my friend’s house way more often. We fell in love. We sang 'I Was Made for Lovin' You' together at our friend's wedding the following week and a few years later, I walked down the aisle towards him. This single tracks the beginning of our relationship and follows it into an unknown future."

The new album sees Higgins move away from the organic sound of the predecessor Oz, and adopt a more electronic and pop sound for the album. It demonstrates Higgins ability to traverse multiple styles and sounds, whilst still writing strong melodic songs, packed with emotion.

Sophie Benjamin from The Australian reviews the album, saying "Solastalgia's best moments come from Higgins taking a long look at the world she's bringing her children into, wrestling with the guilt and fear from that decision, then going to her piano to work out her feelings about it." adding "The album's weakest moments are when Higgins mines her past for inspiration and gets carried away with the bells and whistles of laptop production." Benjamin concluded that "Old fans who loved her early work may be put off by the electronic production, but it's worth pushing through any discomfort and sitting with Solastalgia, an album that only underscores her talent."

Liz Giuffre from The Music said "Although there's quite a bit of thematic doom and gloom on this record, expect plenty of highs, too", adding "A departure into the electro fringe, this is Missy Higgins as far away from organic/acoustic pop as she has ever ventured, and it's well worth the journey…”.
