Float Along – Fill Your Lungs / Oddments is a compilation of Australian indie / psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & The Lizzard Wizzard’s third and fourth studio albums, released in August 2014 by Flightless Records.

For whatever reason, the Austral hemisphere has become a hotbed for a new breed of psychedelic rock bands looking to push the limits of the form without deviating too far from its well-established sonic trappings.

Formed in Melbourne in 2010 by Ambrose Kenny Smith (vocals, harmonica, synthesizer), Cook Craig (guitar, bass guitar), Eric Moore (drums, percussion, theremin), Joey Walker (guitar, vocals), Lucas Skinner (bass guitar), Michael Cavanaugh (drums) and Stu Mackenzie (vocals, Guitar, Flute). The band are noted for their energetic live performances and their prolific recording output, releasing eight albums since 2012.

Their early work saw them primarily perform in a style that blended 1960’s surf music, garage rock and psychedelic rock, however they have since added acid rock and krautrock to their repertoire.

Compiling their first two releases for overseas consumption, Float Along – Fill Your Lungs / Oddments serves as an ideal primer for these sonic explorers.

While “Head On/Pill” forms the centerpiece of Float Along – Fill Your Lungs – “30 Past 7” and the title track follow in the same psychedelic vain – there’s enough flavours here to keep everyone amused. Both “I Am Not A Man Unless I Have A Woman” and “Let Me Mend The Past” feature Ambrose at the vocal helm; his sensual wailing steers the band towards groove-based blues, with lashings of heavy-handed production ensuring things stay left of centre. “Pop In My Step” recalls the saccharine sunshine pop of early Beatles, while the chicken-picking twangs of “God Is Calling Me Back Home” reside somewhere in the realms of acid-country.

Oddments had the difficult “follow-up” album task, with the songs ranges from good to great. There's a lot of unconventional production and sequencing flourishes, which help keep things interesting and makes every song unique, no small feat. Opener "Alluda Majaka" is basically just a three minute organ solo. "Stressin" sounds like it was recorded through a woollen sock in an adjacent room, but after hearing it, you realise that it's treated perfectly. "Sleepwalker", with its vocal riff and harmonies, is a stunner.

"Work This Time" borrows a Sufjan Stevens' melody, and the woollen sock recording returns, giving it a hazy feel and making the song perfect for when you're having trouble getting out of bed. The band saves the best, most surprising moment for second last; the penultimate "Homeless Man In Adidas" is an acoustic lament that is actually quite affecting (not a word I expected to use in the context of a King Gizzard review, but here we are).

Oddments may not top Float Along – Fill Your Lungs in King Gizzard's discography, but it's more than worthy, and a valuable addition to this young, incredible band's oeuvre.

Check out the tracks: “Head On/Pill”; “30 Past 7” and “Sleepwalker”.
