This Was is the debut studio album by the British progressive rock band Jethro Tull, originally released in October 1968 via Island Records.

Formed in Luton, Bedfordshire, in December 1967, Jethro Tull initially played blues rock and soon developed its sound to incorporate elements of British folk music and hard rock to forge their signature sound. The band was led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, and featured a revolving door of lineups through the years. The group first achieved commercial success with 1969's folk-tinged blues album Stand Up, reaching No. 1 on the UK charts, followed by the RIAA Gold Certified Album Benefit in 1970. Their musical style shifted in the direction of progressive rock with the albums Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973), and shifted again to hard rock mixed with folk rock with Songs from the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1978). Selling more than 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and five platinum albums among them, Jethro Tull have been described by Rolling Stone as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands".

Produced by Terry Ellis, and recorded at Sound Techniques in Chelsea, This Was is the only Jethro Tull album to feature guitarist Mick Abrahams before his departure to from Blodwyn Pig in 1969. While vocalist Ian Anderson's creative vision largely shaped Jethro Tull's later albums, on This Was Anderson shared songwriting duties with Mick Abrahams, and incorporates more rhythm and blues and jazz influences favoured by Abrahams than the prog rock the band later became known for.

This Was reached number 10 on the UK Albums Chart and number 62 on the US Billboard 200.

Two singles were released from the album: "A Song for Jeffrey" and "One for John Gee".

This LP record is a reissue (June 2014) on 180 gram vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring the 40th anniversary 2008 stereo remix remastered audio, pressed in Europe via Chrysalis Records.
