Underneath The Colours is the second studio album by Australian rock band INXS, originally released in October 1981 via Deluxe Records in Australia, ATCO Records in the US and Mercury Records in Europe.

INXS were formed as The Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, and began playing covers in Western Australian pubs and clubs, occasionally playing some of their original music. Mainstays of the band were main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarists Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly, bassist Garry Gary Beers, and main lyricist and vocalist Michael Hutchence. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, INXS later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.

In 1981 the band recorded a single “The Loved One” with Richard Clapton as producer. The song was a cover of a 1966 song by the Australian band The Loved Ones and the song reached #18 on the Australian Singles chart.

With the success of this single, the band decided to record their second studio album with Richard Clapton as producer, and they recorded the album at Studios 301 in Sydney. The album was a progression from their first LP with the new wave sound progressing to a more polished level in terms of songwriting and arrangements. Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farris started to emerge as songwriters in this period, whereas all the songs on their debut had been credited to the band as a whole.

Stay Young” was released as the first single from the album and it reached #21 on the Australian Singles charts. Two further singles “Night of Rebellion” and “Underneath the Colours” were released, however these failed to make an impact on the singles charts.

The album reached #15 on the Australian Albums charts and helped the band to sign a new record deal with WEA Australia for releases in Australia, ATCO in the US and PolyGram (Mercury) in the UK and Europe.

This is an album that shows the band developing through extensive touring and gigging in Australia, throughout the local pubs and live music venues.
