Laughter is the third studio album by English singer-songwriter Ian Dury and the Blockheads, originally released in November 1980 via Stiff Records.

Quickly gaining a reputation as one of the top new wave music acts, Ian Dury and the Blockheads' rose to fame with their first single "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", which was named Single of the Week by NME on its release. It was soon followed by the album New Boots and Panties!!, which achieved platinum status. (Although it has been claimed that Dury coined the phrase "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll", a similar phrase had been used by Australian band Daddy Cool for the title of their 1972 album Sex, Dope & Rock'n'Roll: Teenage Heaven). The band built up a dedicated following in the UK and other countries and scored several hit singles, including "What a Waste", "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" (which became a UK number one at the beginning of 1979, selling just short of a million copies) and "Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3".

Self produced by Ian Dury and the BlockheadsLaughter was recorded following the band's support tour for their 1979 album Do It Yourself. The album moves away from disco, and although the steady dance pulse is still apparent, it's balanced by rockers and pub singalongs that give the album more depth than previous albums.

The Blockheads had undergone a significant personnel change since the previous album, Do It Yourself. Chaz Jankel, who played keyboards and co-wrote most of that album's songs, had left in the wake of a stressful tour. Jankel's place on guitar was taken by Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood. The new-line up first appeared on the 'I Want To Be Straight' single, which was released before the album

A number of Laughter's songs appear to deal with Dury's personal problems and demons that he had been going through at that time. Although he always denied that "Delusions Of Grandeur" was about himself, most who knew him at the time felt certain it was. Others, such as "Uncoolohol" (about alcoholism), "Manic Depression (Jimi)" and "Fucking Ada" (both about depression) also seem to make clear references to his troubles at the time. "Hey, Hey, Take Me Away" is confirmed to have been about the time he spent at Chailey's Special School while stricken with polio.

In an interview years later, Dury admitted of the album: "I called it Laughter to cheer myself up."

The album's release was preceded by the single "Sueperman's Big Sister", intentionally spelt wrong so to avoid any copyright issues with DC Comics. Laughter reached No. 48 on the UK Album Charts, and was certified Silver. This would be the last album released via Stiff Records.

Two singles were released to promote the album, with the first not actually on the album itself:  "I Want to Be Straight"/"That's Not All" (UK #22, Australia #11), and "Sueperman's Big Sister"/"You'll See Glimpses", and checkout "Delusions of Grandeur" and "Fucking Ada"

This LP record is reissued (June 2015) on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl with a printed inner sleeve and plastic dust cover (unsealed), pressed in Europe by Demon Records.
