Live at the Matterhorn is the first live album by New Zealand reggae band Fat Freddy's Drop, originally released in May 2001 via The Drop.
About the Band:
Fat Freddy’s Drop are a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy’s Drop gradually became its members' main focus. Fat Freddy’s Drop are known for their improvised live performances; songs on their studio albums are versions refined over years of playing them live in New Zealand, and on tour abroad.
The group gained international recognition in 2003 after their single Midnight Marauders was re-distributed by record labels and DJs in Germany. The first studio album by Fat Freddy’s Drop, Based on a True Story, was the first independently distributed album to reach first place in New Zealand record sales directly after release in 2005, and is the highest-selling album by a national artist in the country's history. Based on a True Story won Best Album at the New Zealand Music Awards the same year, and remained on the top 40 New Zealand sales chart for over two years, establishing them as one of the most successful contemporary bands in the island nation.
The current members of the band are:
- DJ Fitchie aka Chris Faiumu – MPC, Producer
- Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira - Vocals
- Chopper Reeds aka Scott Towers - Saxophone
- Tony Chang aka Toby Laing – Trumpet
- Dobie Blaze aka Iain Gordon – Keyboard
- Hopepa aka Joe Lindsay - Trombone
- Jetlag Johnson aka Tehimana Kerr – Guitar
- MC Slave aka Mark Williams – MC & Videographer
About the Album:
The album was recorded live at the Matterhorn bar, Wellington, New Zealand. The cover of the album features a photo of The Bucket Fountain, which is located near the Matterhorn. Although the album only contains four songs (one on each side) it plays for 70 minutes.
The recording was made when Freddys was honing its sound and chops in the Wellington underground music scene. Having started as a few musician mates playing along to instrumental B-side records dropped by DJ MU aka Fitchie, by 2001 Freddys had evolved to a solid six piece who liked nothing better than to jam.
The stage was literally the back garden of Wellington’s then den of iniquity The Matterhorn bar. The audience consisted of a random collection of 30 people most of whom from memory were hospitality workers having a drink after work. Legend.
It’s Fulla Flash aka Warren Maxwell on saxophone, the fore runner to Chopper Reeds. Trombonist Hopepa aka Joe Lindsay is yet to join the band. The recording was taken on a mini disc feed from the desk but Freddys distinctive hi-tek soul qualities shine through led by the velvet vocals of singer Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira.
Live At The Matterhorn went on to sell Platinum in New Zealand and while it pre-dates the bands record breaking Based On A True Story studio album it's a touchstone for those wanting to experience Freddys early jams, the source for where Freddys story began.
The album has finally been made available on vinyl for the very first time!
