Dusty In Memphis is the fifth studio album by the British singer Dusty Springfield, originally released in March 1969 via Philips Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in the US.

Dusty Springfield was an English pop singer and record producer whose career ran from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive sensual mezzo-soprano voice, she was an important blue-eyed soul singer and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers, with six Top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the US Rock and Roll and UK Music Halls of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties.

For this album Dusty Springfield had signed a new record deal with Atlantic Records, the home of one of her soul music idols, Aretha Franklin. She recorded the album at American Sound Studio in Memphis Tennessee where a number of notable blues musicians had grown up. The sessions were recorded with a first class set of Atlantic Records producers and musicians including Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin, Tom Dowd, conductor Gene Orloff, backing vocalists The Sweet Inspirations, and the instrumental band Memphis Cats, led by guitarist Reggie Young and bassist Tommy Cogbill.

The songs were written by some wonderful songwriters including Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Michel Legrand, Randy Newman, and Burt Bacharach & Hal David.

The album featured one of her Top 10 UK hits, Son of a Preacher Man, which also reached #6 in Australia and #10 on the US Singles Charts.

Although Dusty in Memphis sold poorly when it was first released by Atlantic Records in 1969, the album has since been acclaimed by critics as one of the greatest records of all-time and Springfield's best work. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album at #89 on its 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time listing in 2003.

According to Eric Klinger from PopMatters, its sophisticated style of music influenced the sound of 1990s trip hop artists who sampled songs from the album and became a blueprint for British female singers of the 2000s, including Adele, Rumer, and Duffy.

Check out a couple of tracks from the album:  Son of a Preacher Man; So Much Love; Just a Little Lovin’; and The Windmills of Your Mind.
