The Astonishing is the thirteenth studio album by American progressive rock / metal band Dream Theater, released in January 2016 via Roadrunner Records.

Dream Theater formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John PetrucciJohn Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. They subsequently dropped out of their studies to concentrate further on the band that would ultimately become Dream Theater. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until September 8, 2010, when Portnoy left the band. In October 2010, the band held auditions for a drummer to replace PortnoyMike Mangini was announced as the new permanent drummer on April 29, 2011.

The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines.

The Astonishing is a concept album set in a dystopian future United States and follows the Ravenskill Rebel Militia in their efforts to defy the Great Northern Empire of the Americas using the magical power of music. The concept was developed by guitarist John Petrucci and all the band members quickly got behind the idea, including their record company as well, who were enthusiastic. Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess worked the music together and presented their initial drafts to the other band members who then added and wrote in their parts for their own instruments. In an interview with Artisan News, drummer Mike Mangini reflected, "The biggest challenge for me was interpreting the initial music that was given to me, because there were no drums. So [I was like], 'All right, I need to listen to this, really, as a whole piece to understand where I should kind of let loose or I should lay back a lot.' All that. Just to see it as a whole, 'cause I don't wanna play blindly or try to fit too much where it doesn't belong"...

Veteran composer David Campbell was enlisted to help with orchestrations and arrangements for organic sounds that the band wanted to include, such as strings and choral voices. Campbell then oversaw the recording of these parts in various studios around the world. The album was recorded and mixed during 2015.

The Astonishing has been described as an "honest to God rock opera" by Rolling Stone magazine and has been compared to The Who's Tommy, Rush's 2112 and Pink Floyd's The Wall. The album is a magnum opus with 34 tracks and a total running time of more than two hours. The album's story was inspired by Petrucci's love of fantasy and science fiction franchises such as Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars, as well as his observations on the role of technology in modern-day society.

This is a true rock opera, complete with a cast of characters, a fantastical plot, animated trailers and a teeming raft of ancillary maps and legends.

The album received positive reviews from music critics. Rolling Stone magazine summed up the album as "...However flamboyant or corny the exercise might seem, the players to their credit commit to it fully, while also littering the sonic landscape with chopsy flourishes to reassure the faithful. Enacting all eight characters, vocalist James LaBrie gives a tour de force performance...."

Two singles, The Gift of Music and Moment of Betrayal were released in the preceding months, The Astonishing  becoming the first Dream Theater album to reach #1 on the US Billboard Rock Chart. The album to date has peaked at #11 on the US Billboard 200, #11 on the UK and #10 on the Australian Albums charts.
