Bowie At The Beeb is a compilation album of BBC sessions by English musician David Bowie, released in September 2000 via EMI Records.
David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), better known by his stage name David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor. For over five decades, he was regarded by critics and musicians as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, his music and stagecraft significantly influencing popular music. During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at 140 million worldwide, made him one of the world’s best selling music artists. In the UK, he was awarded nine platinum album certifications, eleven gold and eight silver, releasing eleven number on albums. In the US, he received five platinum and seven gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996.
Bowie At The Beeb is the first official collection of David Bowie’s BBC Radio sessions, and a real treat for fans. Spanning from 1968 to 1972, these recordings find Bowie, if not in his prime, at least at a peak, as he developed from a swinging Carnaby Street pop crooner to swaggering glam rock star.
Opening with the lovely, florid In the Heat Of The Morning, the sessions spend time with David the Dandy before he delves into his dramatic heavy rock of the early '70s. That's where guitarist Mick Ronson made his public debut with Bowie. This is lean, powerful, terrific music.
It contains the bulk of rarities here, including the never-released Looking For A Friend, a rollicking cover of Chuck Berry’s Almost Grown, a version of It Ain't Easy, and a performance of the exquisite Bombers. After a pair of songs by just Bowie and Ronson, The Spiders From Mars kick in, quickly hitting their stride with the classics, like Starman, Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City and results in a live Spiders album arguably better than any yet officially released. BBC Sessions may not be revelatory, yet this set is filled with wonderful music that deepens appreciation of Bowie's first great blast of creativity.
