Who Is The Sender? is the fifth studio album by English folk singer, pianist and songwriter Bill Fay, released in April 2015 via Dead Oceans Records.
After signing to the Deram label in 1967, English singer-songwriter and pianist Bill Fay released two albums, his sefl-titled debut in 1970 and Time of the Last Persecution in 1971, however sales were poor and Fay was dropped from Deram soon after its release. Struggling to secure a release for his third album, Tomorrow, Tomorrow & Tomorrow, Bill Fay took various jobs outside of the music industry, while continuing to record music at home. In 1998 the British record label See for Miles Records reissued his first two albums, prompting a revival of interest in his work, and Fay's third album Tomorrow, Tomorrow & Tomorrow was finally released in 2005 by Durtro Records.
For the follow up to 2012's critically acclaimed album Life Is People, Bill Fay returned to work with producer Joshua Henry, recording Who Is The Sender at Konk Studios, London. Featuring simple, yet profound songs, Who Is The Sender? moves Fay from the category of a curiosity returning after a four-decade absence to make another album, to the category of great British songwriters to which he now firmly belongs.
The album contains all new compositions, with the exception of the closing track, "I Hear You Calling (Studio Reunion)", which was originally recorded for Fay's 1971 album Time of the Last Persecution.
The album received positive reviews from music critics and Mojo magazine listed the album at Number 30 on it's Top 50 Albums of 2015 writing "...recorded in comparative haste after the 40 year wait between his two previous studio LPs, in sound and effect Fay's fourth was a tempered, valedictory affair, the north London singer's delicate philosophies and fragile voice bouyed on sweeping melodies and warm, restful arrangements..."
Check out the tracks "War Machine", "A Page Incomplete", "Who Is The Sender?" "The Freedom To Read" and "I Hear You Calling (Studio Reunion)".
This double album 2LP record set is on 140 gram black vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with a digital download code, pressed in Europe.
