Year Of The Cat is the seventh studio album by British folk singer-songwriter Al Stewart, originally released in July 1976 via RCA Records in the UK and Janus Records in the US.

Al Stewart is a Glasgow-born English singer-songwriter and folk-rock musician who rose to prominence as part of the British folk revival in the 1960s and 1970s. He developed a unique style of combining folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of characters and events from history. He has released sixteen studio albums since his debut album Bedsitter Images in 1967 and continues to tour extensively to this day.

Year Of The Cat was produced and engineered by Alan Parsons, the second of three albums to be produced by Parsons. The album is considered one of his best albums, many would say this to be his masterpiece.

The first single released from the album was "Year of the Cat", and it proved to be a huge hit for him, and one of those songs that lives on today as a staple of classic radio hits. The song is "one of those 'mysterious woman' songs," co-written with British musician and keyboard player, Peter Wood. The orchestration and interplay with the saxophone, guitar and piano make this song memorable and infectious. The song peaked at #8 on the US Hot 100 Singles chart, #31 on the UK and #13 on the Australian Singles charts.

The second single released from the album was "On the Border" which was again a song with a lush production and arrangement. This single peaked at #42 on the US Hot 100 Singles chart.

Stewart wrote "Lord Grenville" about the Elizabethan sailor and explorer Sir Richard Grenville (1542–1591).

The distinctive album cover art was designed by Hipgnosis and illustrator Colin Elgie. Hipgnosis are famous for their work designing the Pink Floyd album covers. The cover art depicts a woman who is obsessed with cats an is seen in the mirror dressing up as a cat for a costume party, and all of the items on her dresser have feline motifs. The cover art wraps nicely between front and back as presented in the original gatefold sleeve cover.

The album became the most successful album release of his career peaking at #5 on the US Billboard 200 and #38 on the UK Albums charts.

Check out a couple of tracks from the album:  Year of the Cat; On The Border; Lord Grenville; and One Stage Before.
