The Virgin Suicides is the second and first soundtrack album by French electronica music duo AIR originally released in February 2000 via Virgin Records.

At its outset, AIR (an acronym for "Amour, Imagination, Rêve" - French for love, imagination, dream) was a solo project started by Nicolas Godin when he was asked by a childhood friend to write a song for a compilation to be released by Source, a small French independent label. "Modulor Mix", a tribute to Le Corbusier, appeared on the Source Lab album in 1995.

Following this small success, Godin asked his friend Jean-Benoît Dunckel, a classically trained pianist, to join him in AIR. Together, they produced further singles for Source, such as "J'ai Dormi Sous L'eau", "Les Professionnels", "Casanova 70" and "Le Soleil Est Près De Moi". Finally, in 1997, AIR were asked to record a full length album. Its mixture of synths, strings and guitar made it a unique release in the electronica genre at the time, and led the duo's debut album Moon Safari to become a UK Platinum selling album.

Following the success of their debut album, AIR were commissioned to compose the original score for Sophie Coppola’s acclaimed film adaptation of The Virgin Suicides.

The Virgin Suicides is a 1999 American drama written and directed by Sofia Coppola and produced by her father Francis Ford Coppola. The film starred James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, and A. J. Cook and was based on the 1993 debut novel of the same name by American author Jeffrey Eugenides.

One track on the album features vocals, "Playground Love” sung by Gordon Tracks the French lead vocalist of the band Phoenix. The remaining songs are instrumental electronic based mood music, utilising analog synths and organ embellished with traditional textures with guitars, brass, drums and strings.

The album received positive reviews upon release and peaked at #14 on the UK Albums charts, also reaching #34 in France and #92 in Australia.

The album was nominated for Best Soundtrack at the 2001 Brit Awards and the French edition of Rolling Stone magazine placed The Virgin Suicides at #49 on their list of the 100 essential French rock albums. In 2011, British music magazine NME placed the album at 1#1 on their 61 greatest soundtracks of all time list.

The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Check out a couple of tracks from the album:  Playground Love; Clouds Up; The Word Hurricane; and Ghost Song.

This LP record is a reissue (June 2015) on 180 gram audiophile vinyl with a printed inner sleeve and digital download code, pressed in Europe via Parlophone Records.
