Moon Safari is the debut studio album by French electronica music duo AIR originally released in January 1998 via Virgin Records.

At its outset, AIR (an acronym for "Amour, Imagination, Rêve" - French for love, imagination, dream) was a solo project started by Nicolas Godin when he was asked by a childhood friend to write a song for a compilation to be released by Source, a small French independent label. "Modulor Mix", a tribute to Le Corbusier, appeared on the Source Lab album in 1995.

Following this small success, Godin asked his friend Jean-Benoît Dunckel, a classically trained pianist, to join him in AIR. Together, they produced further singles for Source, such as "J'ai Dormi Sous L'eau", "Les Professionnels", "Casanova 70" and "Le Soleil Est Près De Moi".

Finally, in 1997, AIR were asked to record a full length album. Its mixture of synths, strings and guitar made it a unique release in the electronica genre at the time, and led the duo's debut album Moon Safari to become a UK Platinum selling album.

Moon Safari was acclaimed by critics and remains AIR's most renowned release. Moon Safari is credited with setting the stage for the budding downtempo music style.

Moon Safari was recorded on an eight-track console initially in an abandoned eighteenth century chateau outside Paris. The ten songs on the album were a striking mixture of dance music loops and pop melodies, moving from lush instrumentals to effortless electro-pop with vocals by Godin and Paris based American singer-songwriter Beth Hirsch.  The album’s retro feel was heightened by their use of mini-Moog and vocoder and the romantic themes of space travel and stargazing. The strings for the album were recorded at Abbey Road studios in London.

The first single from the album “Sexy Boy” was a big hit, reaching #13 on the UK Singles charts and #22 on the US Dance charts. It also reached #68 on the Australian Singles charts. The follow-up single “Kelly Watch The Stars” was a homage to Charlies Angels actress Jaclyn Smith and reached #17 on the UK and #77 on the Australian Singles charts. The third single “All I Need” peaked at #29 on the UK and #83 on the Australian Singles charts.

Moon Safari won the UK’s Muzik magazine’s award for Best Album in October 1998 and featured in top ten lists for other magazines like Spin, Melody Maker, NME and Mojo. Rolling Stone magazine later ranked the album at #93 on their list of the best albums of the 1990s.

The album peaked at #6 on the UK Albums chart and also at #21 on the French and #24 on the Australian Albums charts.
